Oh, and yes - hello there everyone! I dared to give into procrastination the other evening and decided to see
Mirror Mirror. The trailer stroke me as rather parody-ish and when one lives in a society like ours it's pretty clear we all need a good laugh every once in a while.
Suffice to say that I was not disappointing.
Let us start from the beginning: without giving too much away it is clear to everyone that this is another re-interpretation of the classic tale of
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Naturally, one doesn't expect much of a twist in the tale. Not like any other adaptation since Walt Disney's came with anything new or captivating, and as everyone who is familiar with the story will be forced to agree - the story itself is rather dull and its characters are (probably with the exception of the dwarfs) rather bland though not forgettable (because of reasons). Still, what I enjoyed about this movie is that... it doesn't take it seriously.
No really. This movie knows what it is and it isn't trying to be something it can never be. The movie is silly, but it doesn't try to be any other way and for that I ADORED it! It was light and corny - SO corny in places that you couldn't help doubling over in uncontrollable fits of giggles!
"I yearn for the nectar of her skin!"
As far as character go, all I can say is brilliant. The Queen, played by Julia Roberts, strikes me as a rather well-build character. She certainly seems like that kind of woman that is simply
obsessed with her beauty and the movie even goes with some rather clever ways to show it. It certainly explains
why she yearns to be the fairest in the land and was even hinted a few times that she was "your plain psychopathic kind of crazy". Or maybe, a bit more than hinted. Also, her vanity almost distroyed her kingdom yet she doesn't seem to care in the slightest. Everyone is just a cockroach under her feet and that seems like a person willing to bring Brava!
Brighton, her "boot-liker" and kinda this version's version of the hunter, is also a great character. Played by Nathan Lane, he is a bit like that one guy from Enchanted who was willing to do anything for his Queen, but unlike him, this one is actually a rather clever diplomat, while still being one of the most hilarious characters in the whole movie. His lines just crack me up. Keep an eye on this guy when you watch this movie. He is most certainly worth all the giggles.
Prince charming, who actually has a name in this version, is played by Armie Hammer and known to all the people of the land as Prince Andrew Alcott, and is - surprise, surprise - a ton of fun to watch. He is so confident in his own skills (which he has, don't get me wrong) that this overconfidence often leads him into very embarrassing situations. For who - I am not even sure anymore, but he is just a ton of fun as well.
The Seven Dwarfs now... BRILLIANT! Just... just BRILLIANT! YOU.IS.NEVER.GONNA.WANNA.SEE.ANOTHER.GROUP.OF.SEVEN.PEOPLE like THIS ONE EVER.AGAIN. I kid thee not, these seven people are phenomenal. Each second they are on screen is a second you simply enjoy to its full potential. For once, someone finally decided to break the Disney stereotypes and do something new and for that I am projecting my love all over this movie. While most versions of Snow present these seven as brothers or family or whatever (I am too scared to check) in this one they are just a group of outcasts who find comfort and straight in each other. It is quite a delightful turn and what's more: even if no blood ties them down, these seven seem more united than brothers. They listen to each other and respect their comrade's oddities and even take the time to talk things over and decide on a plan of action.
And they argue beautifully.
"Who put you in charge of of her lips"
But the main lady herself, namely Snow White... I don't know... She has these moments when I want to hug her then slap her than hug her again and then give her a high-five. She's just so full of contradictions it's hard for me to figure out just what she is. One moment she is whiny, then she gets all BAMF on all of their asses and then she is back to the child then role-model and
horny teenager and I just can't figure out what her personality actually is. Arguably, you can claim that she is suffering from a form of split-personality distorter. That would be awesome. And the more I think about it, the more I want to scream BRILLIANT yet again.
Overall, if you're looking for a good laugh from a movie which is not quite comedy and not quite parody yet still promises to amuse you, give Mirror Mirror a shot. It's light and perfect for a Saturday evening movie (if you know what I mean) and you can even bring your kids along. Entertaining for the whole family indeed. Just don't take this movie too seriously. It has its faults and shortcomings, but it's entertaining and that is all a movie really needs to be. If you happen to be watching it with
just the right crowd - even better!
And don't forget to stick around for the credit's
impossibly catchy song because reasons.
